With the 2020-21 NBA season just around the corner, speculations regarding the NBA awards are starting to heat up. Philadelphia 76ers‘ new President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey, decided to weigh in on the debate on Instagram.

When asked if Joel Embiid will win MVP this campaign, Morey responded by saying that the Sixers have two potential MVP candidates in the Cameroonian center and Ben Simmons.

Does the statement have validity?

It is hard to imagine Joel Embiid and Ben Simmon winning MVP, but it's not impossible.

Ben is going to be in a fast-paced system for the first time in his career. The Sixers are also moving away from the more traditional style of offense and adapting more to the times, surrounding Simmons with shooters and versatile wing players.

Even with all the changes, it's unlikely that Simmons is even in the conversation for MVP. He'll need to drastically improve his jump shot if he wants to be inserted into that category.

The argument that Embiid could win MVP is more interesting. The Sixers big man has shown his ability to dominate offensively. He has improved every year and, with adequate health, could be one of the best players in the NBA.

This statement by Morey, however, should be taken with a grain of salt. A newly hired team exec is always obviously going to hype up his players going into the season.

Sixers fans were probably ecstatic to see some enthusiasm from their new front office hire, but let's not get carried away.
