A Philadelphia 76ers fan and his wife were ejected from the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday, as the couple held signs that read “Free Hong Kong” and “Free HK” in the stands, as the Sixers took on the Guangzhou Loong-Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association, according to Joseph A. Gambardello of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Sam Wachs says he was stripped of his signs before being ejected out of the arena, at which point he shouted, “Free Hong Kong!” before departing the venue.

Wachs then took to Twitter to complain about his ejection, noting he was forced to leave the game before Ben Simmons notably hit a buzzer-beating three before the end of the first half — a magnanimous moment for Sixers fans.

The fan also made sure to note that his individual protest wasn't unfounded, much like others currently doing so in Hong Kong:

“The protests in HK are not an attack on Chinese sovereignty. The protesters' demands include: permanent withdrawal of the extradition bill, for Carrie Lam to resign, an inquiry into police brutality, for those who've been arrested to be released, and greater democratic freedoms.”

The 76ers have yet to say anything on the matter through their website or in their Twitter account, though it's likely they removed Wachs and his wife at the wake of the recent firestorm between the NBA and China, who have been recently at odds after a pro-Hong Kong tweet by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was met with repugnance by the Chinese government and its main basketball broadcaster CCTV.
