Shams Charania of The Athletic reported on Friday the San Antonio Spurs and DeMar DeRozan have held discussions on a contract extension.

When asked about the report on Saturday by Spurs reporters, DeRozan said he's just concentrating on the upcoming season and hasn't thought about a possible extension.

DeMar DeRozan will make $27.7 million this season. He has a player-option for the 2020-21 season. If DeRozan declines that option, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2020.

In his first season with the Spurs, DeRozan averaged 21.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists. The All-Star California native shot 48.1 percent from the field and 83.0 percent from the free-throw line.

The Spurs lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2019 playoffs in seven games. DeRozan put up 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the series.

San Antonio will get starting point guard Dejounte Murray back this season. Murray missed the entire 2018-19 season with an ACL injury. Nothing is set in stone, but the Spurs will likely start Murray, Derrick White, DeRozan, Rudy Gay and LaMarcus Aldridge this season. On paper, that’s a pretty good starting five.

The Spurs expect DeRozan's second season in their system to be even better than his first. We'll keep an eye on if San Antonio and DeMar end up agreeing on an extension.
