Time is ticking for San Antonio Spurs forward Rudy Gay, and he admits this season is crucial for him as it could determine the future of his career.

As relayed by Spurs beat writer Tom Orsborn, Gay is finally healthy and he feels better than ever.

Gay has spent the last couple of years playing for the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings and Spurs after suiting up for the Memphis Grizzlies for the first six-plus years of his career. Last year, he averaged 11.5 points and 5.1 rebounds — his lowest production since his rookie days — playing under head coach Gregg Popovich.

One of the reasons for the decline in numbers was the injury that limited him to only playing 57 games for San Antonio. He suffered a devastating Achilles injury with the Kings in early 2017, and the veteran spent much of last year just trying to get back to form. Now with better health and a better mindset, Gay is treating this year as make or break.

The Spurs are in the midst of a retool after trading away Kawhi Leonard. Longtime guard Tony Parker has been sent to the Charlotte Hornets, while Manu Ginobili is close to retirement. It is unclear just how long Pop will continue to coach, but the team will try to compete this season with LaMarcus Aldridge and the newly acquired DeMar DeRozan leading the way.

The 32-year-old Gay knows this is an important season for him. If he can stay healthy, Gay and the Spurs may surprise a lot of fans this year.
