The Dallas Stars are entering a new era under recently-hired head coach Peter DeBoer following his exit from the Vegas Golden Knights. After a first-round playoff exit against the Calgary Flames, the Stars moved on from Rick Bowness, and it appears that's not the only significant change coming to Dallas. According to Frank Seravalli, defenseman John Klingberg is expected to hit free agency on July 13 after failing to agree to terms with the Stars on a new contract.

Klingberg will be one of the top free-agent defenders on the open market this offseason and figures to receive interest from a handful of teams. The 29-year-old has spent his entire career with the Stars, debuting in the NHL in 2014. He was the team's fifth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, but has flourished into a crucial player.

Klingberg's seven-year, $29.75 million deal with the Stars expired at the end of the 2021-22 season. Last year he made $6 million, and was due for a significant pay raise on his next deal. While fans were hopeful that an agreement would be reached between the two sides, it seems they failed to find common ground in their negotiations.

In 2021-22, Klingberg featured in 74 games for the Stars, recording 47 points, including 6 goals and 41 assists. It was the first time he played in more than 60 games in the regular season since 2018-19 season. He was rumored to be a trade candidate at the deadline due to his expiring contract, but the Stars elected to keep him and ended up reaching the playoffs. Now, after their first-round exit, the Stars are set to lose Klingberg for nothing.
