The Pittsburgh Steelers are making a move to clear up some cap space, restructuring Stephon Tuitt's contract. Per Field Yates of ESPN, the Steelers converted $5.195 million of his base salary into a signing bonus. The move added nearly $4 million in cap space for Pittsburgh.

According to Curt Popejoy of the Steelers Wire, the Steelers had only $1.1 million in cap space before this move, so this is a big relief for them. Now everybody's attention will turn to what the Steelers plan to spend that extra money on.

They're reportedly negotiating with cornerback Joe Haden on an extension, so it could be used for that. Haden is currently set to enter the final year of a three-year, $27 million deal he signed before the 2017 season. Fellow cornerback Mike Hilton is also heading into the final year of his deal.

As for Tuitt, he's locked up long term. The defensive lineman signed a five-year, $60 million extension back in 2017 that runs through the 2021 season. Tuitt had a solid season last year, racking up 45 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and four passes defended in 14 games.

The Steelers are entering a pivotal season for the franchise. Last year was something of a disaster, as they missed the playoffs and the whole season was engulfed in drama surrounding Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown.

If Pittsburgh doesn't get things turned around in 2019, head coach Mike Tomlin's job could be in danger. The Steelers need to get aggressive, so it's not surprising they're looking to clear up cap space. In addition to locking up their own guys, it wouldn't be shocking to see them go after a veteran free agent or explore the trade market.
