Amid the rampant speculation on whether Ben Roethlisberger may be playing in his final season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle Joe Greene believes that the team should bring him back for the 2022 campaign.

During a recent interview on CBS Sports Radio’s “The Zach Gelb Show,” the longtime Steelers defensive star was asked on whether this season should be Roethlisberger's final one in Pittsburgh, to which he laid out a strong case backing his take.

“I hope not,” Greene said. “I like Ben. I’ve been liking him for a long time. What we saw Thursday night [Vikings game], when Ben started to make the calls on his own when he was going no-huddle, you could see that he could put the ball where he wanted to put it, even though he didn’t have much time to do it.

“If we can get some people around him to block not only for the pass but block for the run, Ben can still be the quarterback that we can with. Ben knows that, and a lot of people know that, but when things are not going well, hey, everybody wants to get on the bandwagon and say, ‘well, it’s time for him to go.'”

Roethlisberger has had quite a roller-coaster run in his 18th campaign with the Steelers. He has notched five game-winning drives, although the offense has been sluggish at times in converting crucial third downs.

As Greene touched on, pass and run blocking has been quite a concern for Pittsburgh this season. For one, as noted by ESPN, the Steelers have notched a 50 percent team pass block win rate, which ranks at 30th in the league.

Roethlisberger has shied away from engaging in talks over whether he may push to re-sign with the Steelers at the end of the season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently reported that the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback is currently leaning towards this season being his last in Pittsburgh.

For now, a crucial clash with the Tennessee Titans awaits Roethlisberger and the Steelers in Week 15.
