Seattle Storm superstar Sue Bird has enjoyed a prolific career in the WNBA, but it seems this will be her final go-around in the league. The 41-year-old took to Twitter on Thursday to announce her decision to retire from basketball at the conclusion of the 2022 WNBA season.

In her statement via Twitter, Bird declared that the 2022 season would be her last, but promised Storm fans that she'd play with the same fire she did during her first year on a basketball court back when she was just a young girl.

Bird has played 19 WNBA seasons, all with the Seattle Storm, and is one of the most renowned players in the league's history. Her 12 All-Star appearances are the most in league history, and she is a three-time WNBA champion, having won the title with the Storm in three separate seasons.

Bird was one of the greatest college basketball players of all time, starring for the dominant UCONN team that was unbeatable during her tenure from 1998-2002. She was the No.1 pick by the Storm in the 2002 WNBA Draft and has absolutely lived up to the hype throughout her career.

Bird made the All-STar game in five of her first six seasons in the league. Throughout her career, she's averaged 11.9 points, 5.6 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. The 41-year-old is averaging a career-low 7.8 points per game this season, though her assist numbers remain excellent with 6.6 per game, the second-highest tally of her career.

The Storm star has been quintessential in the growth of the WNBA throughout her career, and she'll retire as a catalyst for the rise in popularity for the sport, and one of the league's all-time greats.
