Let's just say Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul didn't get a warm reception in his old home Friday night.

Late in the Suns' 114-111 win, in which Paul scored 28 points (including 19 in the fourth quarter) with 14 assists, the New Orleans' crowd broke out into a “F–k Chris Paul” chant.

Paul spent the first six seasons of his career in New Orleans—named the Hornets at the time—before departing via trade to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2011. New Orleans selected him No. 4 overall in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Coincidentally, the head coach of the Hornets during Paul's final years with the team was his current coach with the Suns, Monty Williams. The 50-year-old, who coached the team from 2010 to 2015, wasn't a fan of the anti-Paul chants in the arena.

“This city is not about that,” Williams told reporters after Friday night's win. “This city has always been good to Chris.”

Paul himself heard the chants as well, but he had nothing but love for the city of New Orleans and its fans.

“These are my people, man,” the Suns guard added. “I grew up here. Six of the best years of my life I played for New Orleans … There will always be so much love between me and the city here.”

Monty Williams' sentiments of the chants coming from a vocal minority is likely the truth. Chris Paul gave the franchise some of its more memorable moments and biggest successes, so it is unlikely that the hate came from the majority of fans.

In the 2007-08 season, Paul made his All-Star debut in his home arena in New Orleans. He led the Hornets to a Western Conference Semifinal appearance and finished second in MVP voting. He made the All-NBA First Team that season and was an All-Star each of his last three years with the squad.
