San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has completed his most immediate task upon taking the helm of Team USA in this 2019 FIBA World Cup, qualifying the Americans for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics. USA Basketball breezed to a 5-0 mark in the group stage, becoming one of the two teams from the Americas to lock down a guaranteed spot at the upcoming Olympiad and skipping the qualification process altogether. Argentina mustered the second spot with a 4-1 record.

The new USA helmsman was thrilled to have done so after beating Brazil 89-73 on Monday's final game of the secondary group stage.

“We're thrilled that we qualified for the Olympics,” said Popovich, whose team will now face France on Wednesday in the World Cup quarterfinals, according to The Associated French Press. “With this new situation of qualifying, you don't want to have to do that every year. So it's a pretty big grind.”

USA Basketball already had a pretty tough grind to qualify for the World Cup, but nevertheless did so with a 5-0 mark at the 2017 AmeriCup, using players from the NBA's G League and from overseas, given the unavailability of NBA talent due to scheduling conflicts with the NBA season.

There are still seven Olympic seeds still up for grabs in this World Cup, but luckily for the United States, the Americans will get a fast pass to the big show, which should have a much improved star power showing up to take part after a wave of players renounced their invitation to take part in this World Cup in China.
