The tennis world was shocked on Tuesday when the world’s number one player, Ash Barty, announced that she is retiring from the sport. Barty held the fourth longest streak in Women’s Tennis Association history for consecutive weeks ranked number one, at 114. That streak ends on Tuesday, as the all-time great has decided to call it quits. Barty posted a video on Instagram revealing her decision as emotions swirled.

“Today is difficult and filled with emotion for me as I announce my retirement from tennis. I wasn’t sure how to share this news with you so I asked my good friend @caseydellacqua to help me. I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created together. More to come tomorrow at my press conference.”

The news is especially shocking as Barty appears to still be at or near the top of her game. Barty recently won the Australian Open back in January in front of her home crowd. The Australian native also won two other grand slam singles titles during her career, including the 2019 French Open and the 2021 Wimbledon Tournament.

Ash Barty spoke about lacking the emotional acuity needed to continue to perform at the highest level, noted by WTATennis.com writer Greg Garber.

“I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level any more. I am spent.”

Barty is all but a lock to be admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame one day. Barty retires with a 305-102 singles record, while also winning 12 doubles tournaments throughout her career.
