For the first time in seven years, the Houston Texans opted to use a first-round pick on a defensive back, as they selected former LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. with their No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

After the pick, Stingley took to Twitter to provide his reaction to being selected by Houston, where he simply used the team’s hashtag.

This move can be considered a surprise, especially as there was much outside talk in the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft that Stingley was not going to be a top-five pick today. Still, Texans general manager Nick Caserio sure had quite a need at the position after the team finished the 2021 regular season ranking 23rd in passing yards allowed per game (242.2).

Injuries marred Stingley’s final season at LSU, although he did showcase his potential as a keen defender in coverage over the team’s national championship-winning campaign in 2019. He shined with six interceptions and 15 passes defended in 15 total games played over the season.

Stingley will join a Texans secondary unit that features the likes of Desmond King and free agent signing Steven Nelson. He sure will have the opportunity to win a starting cornerback job on the team by Week 1 of the 2022 season.
