Deshaun Watson is the future of the quarterback position for the Houston Texans. But, as the team learned the hard way last season, you have to have a backup. With Tom Savage moving on, they had to look elsewhere for a No. 2.

They settled on a familiar face—Brandon Weeden.

Weeden last played with the Texans during the 2015 NFL season but was on the roster in 2016. They released him at the start of the 2017 season, but he found another home with the Tennessee Titans a few weeks later.

The Cleveland Browns made him a first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He played in 23 games for the Browns over two seasons and was let go following the conclusion of the second.

Within a few days of getting cut by Cleveland, he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys. He played sparingly in 2014 but saw extensive time after Tony Romo went down with a broken clavicle in 2015. Things didn’t go well, and they benched him for Matt Cassell. When Romo was healthy enough to return, they cut Weeden to make room for Romo.

The Texans picked him about a month later. He ended up starting for Houston in late December and led the team to its first win over the Colts in Indianapolis.

So, while he may not have a stellar reputation, he has earned a spot in the hearts of Houston fans. But it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Texans draft a quarterback to groom as Watson’s backup.
