The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly in the hunt for New York Knicks guard Dennis Smith Jr. The 22-year-old has had a miserable season with the Knicks thus far, and it appears that the Wolves are willing to throw the 6-foot-2 point guard a life line. This is according to Ian Begley of SNY.

Smith has barely figured in New York's rotation this season, with the third-year man currently averaging just 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 18 appearances for the Knicks thus far. Injuries and personal matters have gotten in the way of Smith being able to get it going early in the season, but despite being able to return to full fitness, the former ninth overall pick was the recipient of two consecutive DNP-CD's prior to his cameo against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday.

Smith logged eight points, a 3-pointer, five rebounds, five assists, a steal, and a block in just 13 minutes of action in a blowout victory against the Hawks. This just goes to show that the former Dallas Mavericks rising star can still get things going when given the opportunity.

Unfortunately for him, he has fallen way behind in the pecking order in New York, as he currently functions as a third-string point guard behind Frank Ntilikina and Elfird Payton. Not even the recent coaching change did him any favors, with interim head coach Mike Miller apparently also unwilling to give Smith a significant role in his rotation.

This is likely why teams like the Wolves are looking to pounce on Smith, who undeniably holds a lot of potential. Perhaps a change in scenery could help jump start his career again.
