Training camp doesn't necessarily mean that respective team rosters are fixed and therefore no tweaks can be made. For all we know, coaches and front office members are keeping a close eye on how a specific player fits in their system. If they deem that an adjustment is in order, then they won't hesitate to pull the trigger. With that in mind, here are two potential trade candidates for Minnesota Timberwolves.

Timberwolves Trade Candidates

Philadelphia 76ers

Ben Simmons was true to his word that he wasn't going to show up to training camp. We may never see him don the 76ers jersey ever again. Among all the teams involved in trade rumors with them, it was the Timberwolves who seemed to have been closing in on a deal. Details reveal that the organization wasn't keen on breaking up their core comprised of Karl-Anthony Towns, D'Angelo Russell, and Anthony Edwards. The 76ers would only agree to a package if it involved at least one of those stars.

In an interesting turn of events, the Timberwolves fired president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas. Among the many reasons behind his firing was the trade that involved D'Angelo Russell. Details reveal that the pick the Wolves gave up was only given very light protections. This pretty much put a dent in the Wolves' long-term plans.

It is important to note that there's nothing wrong with Russell. It was Rosas' bad decision-making regarding the deal that got him sacked. However, we cannot discount the fact that perhaps it was Rosas who did not want to budge and throw Russell into a package. Now that the Rosas' fiasco is over, perhaps it's time for the organization to rethink the possibility of getting Simmons in exchange for Russell. Yes, Russell is a good player but he's not a defensive beast or a genius playmaker like Simmons. Rosas' mess could be cured by the acquisition of Simmons. Of course, the Wolves would have to insert someone like Malik Beasley or even Josh Okogie. This is a fair trade no matter how you look at it.

Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks made some key roster tweaks in the offseason by adding shooters Reggie Bullock and Sterling Brown. They also locked in Jason Kidd as their new head coach. These changes, at least at face value, make the Mavericks a really good team. However, they seem to be lacking one more piece — particularly a secondary playmaker that takes off some of the load off Luka Doncic. This brings us to the Timberwolves.

Note that the Mavericks were actually eyeing Goran Dragic in the offseason. His ties with Doncic were obviously a factor. But it was more of Dragic's profile as a combo guard that attracted the team. Things didn't pan out the way the team envisioned it. But don't expect the Mavs front office to just sit down and wait for an opportunity. Russell could be very well on their radar.

To get Russell, the Mavs will have to part ways with Kristaps Porzingis — the Latvian who has been logging in good numbers yet there are lingering questions on his overall fit with Doncic. It would be interesting to see if Kidd would be able to solve these problems. But at the same time, Mavs fans won't be shocked if the organization pulls the trigger before the regular season kicks off. Kidd may have given them word that there's no way he could fix the Porzingis dilemma. A trade for Russell could be the only solution to it.
