The Tennessee Titans have decided to part ways with head coach Mike Mularkey after failing to come to an agreement over the future, Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline.com reports.

Mularkey’s firing comes just a week after Mularkey led the franchise to their first playoff win in close to a decade, which prompted the Titans' controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk to say Mularkey would be their coach moving forward.

There had also been talks of extending Mularkey’s contract, which Adams Strunk confirmed in her statement on Mularkey’s dismissal. However, Adams Strunk also revealed that there were clear differences with Mularkey in terms of the direction of the team, which was why they decided to move on from their head coach.

“In fact, we did discuss extending his future with our team over the past week, but in those discussions about the direction of the team, it became evident that we saw different paths to achieve greater success.

“It is certainly unfortunate that we couldn’t find enough common ground. I generally believe that continuity is the best path for success, but I also view this as an important moment for our football team as we try to make that next step to sustained success on the field. Jon will begin the search immediately to identify that person.”

After serving as interim head coach for the last five games of the 2015 season, Mularkey was officially given the head coach title on January 16, 2016.

The Titans went 9-7 in back-to-back seasons under Mularkey. They made it to the playoffs in 2017, which is their first trip back to the postseason since 2008.

Mularkey famously installed the team’s “exotic smashmouth” offense which leaned more on the running game. However, franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota regressed significantly this season under Mularkey’s watch and the team’s offense as a whole was inconsistent.
