The US Open might yet be a possibility for WTA star Serena Williams. Williams, who was ousted in the first round at Wimbledon, had just returned after a year's absence. Naturally, many were wondering what her plans would be in regard to the calendar's final Grand Slam in New York. After Williams' big tuneup decision on Friday, it seems she is trending in the right direction ahead of August's US Open, per ESPN.

Serena Williams has decided to compete next month in Toronto, having returned to action two weeks ago at Wimbledon after a year away from competition, tournament organizers said on Thursday.

Williams, who suffered a second straight Wimbledon first-round exit this year, elected to use her protected ranking to enter the main draw of the Aug. 6-15 National Bank Open for the first time since her run to the 2019 final.

Serena Williams will be playing in the National Bank Open, which takes place from August 6-15 in Toronto. That would seem to serve as a nice tuneup for the US Open, slated to begin on August 29.

Williams, who missed a year due to a leg injury she suffered at last year's Wimbledon, used her protected ranking to enter the tournament at Toronto.

Of course, nothing is set in stone yet. However, it seems like Williams, who was noncommittal about her tennis future after the Wimbledon loss to Harmony Tan, is making a push to compete at the US Open.

That's great news for the WTA and fans of the sport.
