The PGA received some shocking news recently, as star golfers Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson officially announced their intentions to join the rival LIV Golf association. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan had said in the past that any player who participates in the rival tour's events will face a potential ban. As such, many were wondering about the status of Mickelson and Johnson for the upcoming US Open, which begins on June 16, just a week after LIV Golf's first event tees off.

On Tuesday, the United States Golf Association, golf's governing body in America, made a major decision on Mickelson and Johnson, per Golf Week.

“Should a player who had earned his way into the 2022 U.S. Open, via our published field criteria, be pulled out of the field as a result of his decision to play in another event? And we ultimately decided that they should not.”

This clears the way for Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Kevin Na and other players who have a spot in the field at the U.S. Open and who are playing in this week’s LIV Golf event to compete.

There it is! Mickelson and Johnson will be allowed to compete at the US Open, despite their LIV Golf participation. The USGA cited the openness of their tournament while also preaching that the criteria for the tourney was set earlier.

The governing body believed that it wasn't fair to prevent Mickelson and Johnson from competing because of that. However, the USGA made sure to echo the PGA, saying that they don't endorse LIV Golf.

In a surprising twist, Mickelson, Johnson and some of the PGA's biggest names should be at the Country Club when the 2022 US Open tees off.
