The Minnesota Vikings made headlines with the firing of offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. Head coach Mike Zimmer has since provided more clarity on why he was let go.

It is no secret that the Vikings offense had largely struggled to develop a rhythm on offense. According to ESPN's Courtney Cronin, Zimmer felts the time came for some changes to be made:

“I felt like we always had very good dialogue. I felt like there was a sense of urgency here in the last 3 weeks of the season of trying to improve offensively, especially and trying to win these final three games of the season.”

There is certainly plenty of truth to Zimmer's comments. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the right moves have been made thus far. Defilippo had been on the hot seat throughout the 2018 NFL season due to the underwhelming performance on offense. They rank 17th in total yards per game (354.4) and 20th in scoring (21.7). As a result, he was pitted with most of the blame and ultimately released.

DeFilippo's stay at the top was rather brief. He was among the key departures of the Philadelphia Eagles' coaching staff that had been poached in the offseason following their impressive Super Bowl run. As the former quarterback coach, he received plenty of praise for helping with the development of Carson Wentz in the midst of an MVP-caliber year. He quickly rose to the top of the ranks of the coaching market prior to the 2018 campaign. Unfortunately, his firing will undoubtedly affect his pursuit of a potential head coaching job.
