The Minnesota Vikings have placed the franchise tag on Anthony Harris in a bit of a surprise move, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

There were doubts the Vikings would have money to bring Harris back but with the team agreeing to a long term extension it opened up cap space for the 2020 season.

Harris has said multiple times that he would like to return to the Vikings if everything would work out but there was some doubt that he would take a hometown discount to stay.

“Yeah, if all things were equal — looking at the organization from a standpoint top to bottom, from the owners down to the coaches down to the locker room and the culture they have. It's somewhere I'd definitely like to stay,” Harris said recently on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I love Minneapolis, love the organization, it's a good city. The people there are really nice. It's very competitive, so I mean it has it has everything I want and I'd definitely like to stay if possible.”

Harris was scheduled to be the top safety to hit the market, according to Pro Football Focus, Harris had a mark of 91.1 which was the top-ranked in all of football. During the 2019 season, Harris had 60 tackles and six interceptions. and he is going to be a key part of the Vikings defense next season.

Applying the franchise tag also gives the Vikings more time to try and negotiate a long term deal to hopefully keep Harris long term in the purple and gold.
