Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors are looking at their options for the injury-riddled center position.
Golden State worked out several free agent big men in Friday at Chase Center as they look to bolster their depleted frontcourt. According to Kerr, they are currently evaluating whether they will add another center.
“There’s been some thought,”Kerr said of adding another center, per Connor Letourneau of San Francisco Chronicle. “We had a workout yesterday with a few guys. That’ll be decided sometime in the next few days. … We are in a tough spot at that center position — not just in terms of the season 2½ weeks from now, but just training camp.
“Positionally, you need multiple guys in each spot to be able to practice and run your drills. We’re in a little bit of a strange spot that we weren’t anticipating. We haven’t decided what we’re going to do, but we’ll see.”
The Warriors are dealing with key injuries to three of their big men. Willie Cauley-Stein is out with a foot injury and is expected to miss at least the first four games of the 2019-20 regular season. Meanwhile, Kevon Looney is sidelined with a minor hamstring issue he sustained early in training camp.
Furthermore, rookie power forward Alen Smailagic is out for the “foreseeable future” after rolling his ankle.
The injuries leave the Warriors with only Omari Spellman as a legitimate big, although there are still concerns playing him at center since the former Villanova standout is more fit as a power forward.
Golden State's decision will likely depend on the recovery of Looney and Smailagic, though it won't be surprising to see them add another center — even if it's just for training camp.
