Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson will become an unrestricted free agent next summer if he doesn't sign a contract extension with the team before the 2018-19 season ends, but don't count on the sharpshooter leaving Golden State.

At media day on Monday, Thompson said he's not curious to test out free agency and believes the situation he's in is one that players are trying to get to.

Klay Thompson will make $18.9 million this season. The 28-year-old is unlikely to sign an extension this season because if he does, he will cost himself close to $86 million. If Thompson waits until next summer, he would be looking at a max contract starting around $188 million. If he signed one this season, he would get close to $102 million.

Thompson has consistently said he wants to retire with the Warriors. Golden State has won back-to-back championships and three of the last four Finals. At the Thompson Family Foundation Golf Tournament in August, Thompson said he wants to be a “Warrior for life.”

“I’ve said it many times before: I would like to be a Warrior for life,” Thompson told the Bay Area News Group. “Contract negotiations are way down the line. But I think we all have the same interest. I would love to be here for the rest of my career.”

In 537 career games with the Warriors, Thompson has averaged 19.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the field, 42.2 percent from 3, and 85.2 percent from the three-throw. Thompson and his backcourt mate, Stephen Curry, are arguably the greatest shooting duo in NBA history, and it would be foolish for Thompson to leave Golden State considering they have a chance to win the title every single season.
