This year's rookie class did not receive much fanfare compared to previous batches, but there have been pleasant surprises like the strong showing of Charlotte Hornet LaMelo Ball and Sacramento King Tyrese Haliburton. One player who has not been living up to his draft position as of late is Golden State Warrior James Wiseman.

One of the more interesting outings of his first NBA season happened in Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Wiseman played a total of 12 minutes off the bench all in the fourth quarter.

Per Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Warriors coach Stever Kerr gave a stern response to the Wiseman benching.

“I'm not gonna go into detail, but this is all part of development as a young player,” Kerr said. “You gotta take care of your business.”

Kerr was pleased with Wiseman's play as he looked aggressive in that fourth quarter, hitting six of his seven shots, while grabbing seven boards. According to The Athletic's Anthony Slater, Kerr gave a quick history lesson regarding the benching of players in Golden State.

“You have to prove it in this league. If you want to be Steph or Draymond, you have to do what they did,” Kerr stated. “And guess what? Both those guys were benched their rookie year. Both those guys had to fight. Even the superstar players have to earn their way in this league.”

Kerr mentioned that the 12 minutes played by Wiseman is by no means an indicator for his playing time the rest of the season.

The dilemma Kerr and the Warriors are facing is that while developing the number two overall pick is important, how must they balance it with the goal of making the playoffs? Focusing on the latter could come at the expense of Wiseman seeing action on the court.
