Warriors' coach Steve Kerr commended Klay Thompson's willingness to take less money in the future, similar to the way Kevin Durant did this summer, in order to keep the team's core intact. Thompson said earlier this week that he'd take a few million less if it meant that this group could stay together longer, given he is slated to be the first long-term signing to become an unrestricted free agent by 2019.

“We have a very special group,” Kerr said. “I'd be willing to take less, too.”

Kerr was consequently asked how much less money he'd be willing to take, getting caught on a dilemma.

“Probably like KD, like I would give up the same amount as… actually I may lose a lot of money in that scenario,” he joked. “No, we're all gonna get asked about things like that and our guys know how special this era is. I think that's what Klay is trying to express.”

Durant took a sizable discount in order to get Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livington, and others a substantial raise from their last contract. Warriors management delivered by bringing back seven of their free agent and adding two key cogs to the equation during the summer.

Thompson will be asked to make a similar sacrifice with the Warriors well over the luxury tax — a moment which will prove pivotal to this team's structure moving forward.
