All the success the Golden State Warriors are having over the past few seasons appears to be taking a toll on the team – at least in terms of sustaining their level of interest over a course of an entire NBA season.
Make no mistake about it. The Warriors are going to begin next season with the goal of accomplishing a rare three-peat. However, the Warriors may have gotten used to so much winning lately that they might become susceptible to taking some games for granted. The solution to address that kind of issue is largely in the hands of Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who told reporters during the end-of-season press conference an abstract of his plan to keep his players’ focus steady next season, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
Since taking the head coaching reins in Golden State in 2014, Steve Kerr has managed to steer the team to three NBA titles in four seasons. The Warriors have won at least 58 games in each of those campaigns and have looked invincible ever since Kevin Durant came into their fold in 2016. Excluding the recent Western Conference Finals in which they were pushed to the hilt by the Houston Rockets, the Warriors haven’t really been threatened in any rounds in the playoffs since Durant arrived in Golden State.
It’s not a stretch to think that the Warriors are going to be as dominant again next season while operating with the same core they had over the past two seasons. Regardless how the free agency shakes out and whether other teams will come into next season with more stacked lineups, the Warriors’ biggest challenge remains themselves, and keeping them interested is a more serious concern that what most people believe.
