The Washington Football Team has acquired veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for a one-year, $10 million deal, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Fitzpatrick entered the NFL in 2005 and has played for a number of teams since his arrival. Last season, the seasoned journeyman was the caretaker QB for the Miami Dolphins, who needed someone to bridge the gap as rookie Tua Tagovailoa got acclimated in the league. Fitzpatrick had a solid campaign, including one of the best passes of the season: A 34-yard pass in the clutch against the Oakland Raiders as he was dragged to the ground by his facemask.

Washington is in a fickle quarterback situation in the upcoming season with the loss of Alex Smith and the lackluster play of 2019 first round pick Dwayne Haskins. With neither of the two returning, the squad needs depth to support star signal-caller Taylor Heinicke.

Fitzpatrick is a short-term option, but he has proven through his time with the Dolphins that he can still be productive. According to Schefter, the 38-year-old Fitzpatrick is expected to be the starter heading into camp, with Heinicke behind him on the depth chart.

It is unclear whether or not the WFT will select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft. But the addition of Fitzpatrick makes the timeline less stressful, as there would be no pressure for the fresh rookie to start right away. As was seen in South Florida, this is a setup that is well suited for Fitzpatrick.

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions, boasted a 68.5 completion percentage, and racked up 2,091 yards in nine games played last season. While he may be past his prime, he can still be a big contributor and bring his “Fitzmagic” to Washington.
