On NBA Draft Lottery night, the Minnesota Timberwolves landed the No. 1 pick for the second time in six years. But unlike in 2015 when Karl-Anthony Towns was the obvious choice, this year has a top tier of three players that most draft experts conclude are in the running for the top selection: James Wiseman, LaMelo Ball, and Anthony Edwards.

And according to Ben Beecken on the Locked On Wolves Podcast, the Timberwolves don’t even need two of those top 3 players and are looking to use the No. 1 pick in a trade instead.

Ben Beecken: Now in this draft, there’s maybe a consensus of a top tier of three guys, depending on your opinion, but two of those three guys don’t even fit what the Wolves need.

If you look at it at face value, LaMelo Ball is a point guard, the Wolves have D’Angelo Russell. James Wiseman is a center, the Wolves have Karl-Anthony Towns. Now in this day and age of basketball, you can have multiple guys that have similar things, because basketball is less tied to positions than say five or 10 years ago.

Now the Hornets and the Bulls are the big winners moving into the top four in the lottery. But the Wolves and Warriors going one and two is going to be extremely interesting as they’re the two teams, of all the teams in the lottery, those are the two teams that would most desperately love to trade their pick for some sort of win-now talent.

I understand it feels ridiculous to compare the Wolves to the Warriors in terms of win- now mode because the Warriors went to the Finals each of the last five years and won three titles. But they both have multiple All-Stars on their roster. The Wolves have two 24-year-old All-Stars, they don’t need a 21-year-old to add to their core.

They need a guy who’s 25, 26, 27 has a few years under his belt, hopefully has an All-Star, but not way outside the window of Towns or Russell. Now, that’s what they’re looking for. It’s a pretty narrow profile probably for what Gersson Rosas is looking for, but what better trade chip for them to have? Even in a supposedly weaker draft than the No. 1 overall pick?

Minnesota is in a good position to try and make a splash, and that’s certainly what they’re going to try and do.
