On Wednesday, the All England Club announced their intent to ban world no. 2 Daniil Medvedev and other Russian players from Wimbledon in 2022. Medvedev, along with fellow top-10 countryman Andrey Rublev and any Belarusian players on the ATP Tour, will not be taking to the iconic grass courts this year amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. World no. 1 Novak Djokovic, no stranger to controversy, bashed Wimbledon's decision, via ESPN.

“I will always condemn war; I will never support war being myself a child of war,” Djokovic told reporters after narrowly beating compatriot Laslo Dere at the Serbia Open on Wednesday.

“I know how much emotional trauma it leaves. In Serbia we all know what happened in 1999. In the Balkans, we have had many wars in recent history.

“However, I cannot support the decision of Wimbledon, I think it is crazy.

“When politics interferes with sport, the result is not good.”

Djokovic, a native of Serbia who grew up in war times, will never support the act of war. However, he “can't support” Wimbledon's decision to prevent Medvedev and others from participating in the tournament.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion said that it's never a good thing when “politics interferes with sport.” While there is certainly some level of reasoning behind defending Medvedev and Rublev, who have both spoken out against the war, it's difficult for politics to not be involved in sports in today's day and age.

Djokovic is no stranger to that occurrence himself, as he was unable to participate in the Australian Open due to a problem with his visa stemming from his refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Like him or not, it's certainly an interesting viewpoint that Djokovic, and others, have towards the ban of Medvedev and the ATP's Russian players in Wimbledon.
