NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson is in full support of Washington Wizards guard Russell Westbrook to surpass his all-time triple-double record. Robertson, who was considered the first triple-double king of the NBA, has 181 career triple-doubles. Westbrook is just three more triple-doubles shy of catching Robertson’s all-time record.

When asked how Robertson feels about Westbrook catching him on the all-time list, the former Milwaukee buck shared some kind words for the current Wizard.

“There’s no doubt about it. I hope he gets it. I think he’s one of the elite guards in basketball, and I think it’s ridiculous that some sportswriters criticize him because he has not won a championship. Players don’t win championships by themselves. You’ve got to have good management. You need to get with the right group of players,” shared Robertson via New York Times about Russell Westbrook.

Westbrook has caught a ton of criticisms throughout his career. One of the strongest arguments naysayers have against the 32-year-old is his inability to win championships. But Robinson points out how different the dynamic is in the NBA today. One of the major reasons why players win championships is because of their willingness to form superteams.

“Look at Brooklyn: Who could have done this years ago? How things have changed. It seems now that what’s happening in basketball, and I haven’t seen it happen in football yet, is players will get together and say, “Let’s go and play for this team so we can win.” Years ago, you wouldn’t have thought of doing that,” added Robertson.

Robertson has a point. There have been a ton of superteams these days but even Westbrook does not have one at least at the moment, there’s no denying how special of a player he is.
