The Washington Wizards have made some underrated upgrades this offseason, adding swingman Austin Rivers via trade, signing Jeff Green and also signing Dwight Howard to a two-year deal.

Owner Ted Leonsis is confident his team will work some magic in a wide-open Eastern Conference, now that LeBron James had relinquished his throne after a near-15-year reign. Leonsis spoke to Candace Buckner of The Washington Post about his expectations for the upcoming season, and he clearly expressed his optimism about the roster.

“If you look at this roster for the Wizards, I think it’s as deep or the deepest team that we’ve ever had,” Leonsis said. “I think that the East will be very competitive, but I don’t think we should be overlooked. I think we’re going to have a really good team this year.”

The Wizards acquiesced to John Wall's request for an athletic big, trading Marcin Gortat for Rivers and plugging Howard into the starting lineup — switching the former backup for a lifetime starter at center.

Teams like the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and new-look Toronto Raptors will likely be in the running for the Eastern Conference crown, but counting out the Wizards would be a mistake if they can remain healthy, as they've been hampered by injuries to Wall and running mate Bradley Beal during the last few postseasons.
