WWE Day 1 was a blast. It was fun enough that it's almost forgivable for WWE to skip TLC, and it sure did deliver in terms of surprises. WWE doesn't always make creative decisions that leave hardcore fans happy, but this time the company was able to execute something brilliant out of an unfortunate circumstance. As (former) WWE Champion Big E puts it: who would have had Brock Lesnar winning the WWE championship from him on their New Year's Bingo Cards? Totally no one.

That's right, Brock Lesnar is your new WWE Champion, taking it off the waist of Big E in a fatal-five-way matchup in WWE Day 1's Main Event. Lesnar was originally billed to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship, a clash of giants and between two Paul Heyman guys. But Reigns contracted COVID-19 right before the show, making him ineligible to compete. But if you're The Beast, you're not appearing in WWE Day 1 without having a title match, especially not when you're entering the pay-per-view with the intention to leave the arena with a shiny new belt. And so, WWE decided to add Lesnar in the championship picture for Raw's main event match instead. The Fatal-Four-Way involving Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Bobby Lashley, and the defending champ, Big E all of a sudden had a Beast within their midst.

After an electrifying match, The Beast pinned the champion himself, after an ecstatic F-5, Brock Lesnar got the 1-2-3 to become the new WWE Champion. With Brock as the new champ, we're now set up for a champion versus champion matchup in the near future. Even with a new belt, Brock's certainly not done yet with Reigns. WWE should pull the trigger on Wrestlemania, feeding the two monstrous champions with strong contenders along the way. But given WWE's propensity to cash in on short-term gains, this could happen as soon as the Royal Rumble.

Still, what a way to start the year.
