The XFL was among the many sports leagues that were affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The league is officially pulling the plug on their first season. On Friday, the XFL officially canceled their 2020 season due to the coronavirus.

Before the coronavirus pandemic struck, the XFL was halfway through their 10-week regular season. But with the XFL drawing decently larger crowds, they aren't willing to take a risk of further spreading the disease.

With the XFL being canceled, the players that took part in the startup league can sign with NFL teams beginning on March 23. As NFL Network's Tom Pelissero tweeted, the XFL players can begin negotiating contracts on Monday at 9 a.m.

In light of that, the likes of P.J. Walker, Cardale Jones, Jordan Ta'amu, and others from the XFL will likely draw interest from NFL teams. While the league ended sooner than they imagined, they can consider their first season a success considering the circumstances.

The cities that the teams in the XFL resided in were showing tons of support at home games in the first five weeks.

That is something the XFL will want to carry over into their second season next year. Despite the league being cut short in 2020, commissioner Oliver Luck is ‘committed' to having a season in 2021.

Some sports leagues are taking a wait-and-see approach with the coronavirus pandemic, longing for progress in the coming weeks. On the other hand, the XFL is choosing to cancel the rest of their regular season, likely to give the players a better chance to make NFL rosters.
