Legendary's MonsterVerse has proven to be a consistent hit in theaters, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the streak continued with 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. On the back of a successful theatrical run that has seen the film grossed around $550 million, the franchise is set to continue and has turned to the MCU to find the next film's writer.

It was confirmed on Friday that the MonsterVerse is set to continue with a new Godzilla x Kong entry and Legendary has already found its screenwriter in seasoned writer David Callaham, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It was not confirmed if Terry Rosio, Simon Barrett, or Jeremy Slater, who helped pen Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, would be returning to work on another film.

Callaham, himself, is an accomplished screenwriter who has worked on some of the biggest franchises of the last 20 years, most notably being the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

His first MCU outing was an uncredited rewrite on 2015's Ant-Man, which underwent multiple rewrites after its original director, Edgar Wright, and his frequent collaborator Joe Cornish left the film.

Callaham's biggest mark on the MCU, though, was helping pen the story and script for 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He co-wrote the script with fellow screenwriter Andrew Lanham and Shang-Chi's director Destin Daniel Cretton, with Callaham being the first hired to work on the script.

While he stayed within the Marvel umbrella, Callaham would make the jump from live action to animation when he was brought on board to help write 2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He worked alongside the film's producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to pen the script and the trio is set to write its sequel Beyond the Spider-Verse, which does not have a set release date.

Giving Life to Monsters

The next Godzilla x Kong wouldn't be Callaham's first outing in the MonsterVerse, either.

The writer first dipped his toes into the kaiju-centric cinematic universe with the film that started it all, 2014's Godzilla. Callaham pitched and wrote the first draft of Godzilla's script, which would undergo rewrites as the film's development went along. He was, however, ultimately credited for penning Godzilla's story while fellow screenwriter Max Borenstein was credited with writing the screenplay.

Borenstein, himself, would go on to work on multiple MonsterVerse projects including Godzilla vs. Kong and, most recently, the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Callaham has plenty of other notable credits to his name, such as helping Sylvester Stallone pen the first two Expendables films and co-writing Wonder Woman 1984 with director Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns.

As for who will be in the director's chair for the next Godzilla x Kong, that was not announced. Adam Wingard served as the director for Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, but has not been confirmed for the next film.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is in theaters.
