Ti West and A24 haven't released MaXXXine, the third film in the Mia Goth-led X series, yet, but the director has an idea for a fourth film.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, West revealed that MaXXXine will end the story of Maxine. However, he has ideas to expand the universe beyond the character.

“I do have one idea that plays into these movies that could maybe happen,” West revealed. “I don't know if it'll be next. It might be. We'll see.”

He continued by teasing that any potential continuation of the X series isn't “what people are expecting it to be.”

“Then hopefully I can just put this in a box under the bed, take a breath, and figure out what's next,” West said about releasing MaXXXine. “I'll say that, if there's more to be done in this X franchise, it's certainly not what people are expecting it to be.

“It's not just picking up again a few years later and whatever. It's different in the way that Pearl was an expected departure,” he added.

When X came out, it was a hit for A24. It grossed $14.7 million at the box office. For a small indie horror film, that's a win. A prequel film, also starring Goth, was surprisingly announced shortly after. Pearl was released later in the year in 2022. It followed the title character and depicted her origin story.

In X, Mia Goth pulled double duty. She played one of the teenagers making an adult film, Maxine, and the elderly woman hunting them, Pearl.

Luckily, Goth will only have to play one role in MaXXXine. The film is a sequel to X and will follow Maxine as she continues following her aspirations of becoming an actress. At the same time, she has to evade the Night Stalker in 1985 Los Angeles.

Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Moses Sumney, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon will star alongside Goth in the film.

Ti West edited, wrote, and directed the film. He also produced it alongside Goth, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. A24 will release the film on July 5, 2024.

Earlier in his career, West gained notoriety for directing horror films such as The Roost and Trigger Man. He is a multi-talented filmmaker — he composed the score for his directorial debut on top of editing, writing, and directing it. He was the cinematographer for his second film, Trigger Man.

In the following years, West continued working in the horror genre. He directed The House of the Devil, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, The Innkeepers, The Sacrament, and In a Valley of Violence. His last three feature films have all been in the X series for A24.

MaXXXine will be released on July 5.
