Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers just finished out an abysmal 2023 season. Along the way, both Young and the Panthers made new NFL history that shows just how bad the campaign got.

Carolina didn't lead for a single second in the fourth quarter throughout the regular season. They became the second team in history to accomplish that feat, with the first being the 1982 Baltimore Colts, via David Newton of ESPN. The Colts were playing in a strike-shortened season.

Through those struggles, Young played in eight games in which he did not throw a touchdown pass. That is the third-most for a rookie quarterback since 1950 and the second-most by a No. 1 overall pick, via Newton.

Panthers fail to pounce

Overall, Carolina went just 2-15 on the season. It was the first time the Panthers had won fewer than five games since 2010. Young struggled to live up to his No. 1 overall pick expectations, throwing for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

But for all their struggles and all their embarrassing records, interim head coach Chris Tabor sees a bright future for Young and the Panthers. After falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 18, Tabor still gave Young a vote of confidence for the future, via the Associated Press.

“I think when he is in year 12 and winning a lot of games and slicing people up a little bit, I think he will remember his first year and probably look back and say, ‘you know what, it stunk at the time but this helped me get to where I'm at,'” Tabor said. “He has a really bright future.”

It certainly wasn't the start Carolina or Bryce Young were hoping for. But the Panthers' saving grace is that it can only go up from here.
