The Carolina Panthers have had a brutal 2023 season, winning just two games heading into their Week 18 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While almost nothing has gone right for the AFC South team, there is at least one bright spot, as defensive tackle Derrick Brown set a new record for his position in the final week of the season.

Derrick Brown, the fourth-year DT out of Auburn, came into the Panthers’ Week 18 matchup with the Buccaneers with 96 tackles on the season, which is a huge jump from his first three seasons, which went 34, 41, and 67 tackles from his rookie season.

In the first half against the Bucs, Brown had four tackles, bringing him to 100 on the year and breaking the NFL record for most tackles by a defensive lineman in a single season.

Miami Dolphins DT Christian Wilkins set the previous record of 98 last season. Wilkins also had the previous record of 89 set in 2021.

Despite putting up history-making numbers this season, Derrick Brown did not make the 2024 NFC Pro Bowl team. Voters gave the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald, New York Giants’ Dexter Lawrence, and San Francisco 49ers’ Javon Hargrave the nod over Brown.

The Panthers DT was the No. 7 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft and is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract. However, the team has picked up his fifth-year option for next season, when Brown will make $11.6 million. After that, he will either become an unrestricted free agent or get the franchise tag if he doesn't sign a new deal this offseason.
