The Calgary Flames will work quickly to try and lock down Johnny Gaudreau on a new contract. The star forward was unwilling to discuss a new deal during the regular season, focusing instead on his hockey. After the Flames were bounced by the Oilers in the Battle of Alberta in the second round of the NHL Playoffs, it's time for Calgary to address Gaudreau's future with the team.

Both sides seem determined to get a deal done, which certainly bodes well for the Flames. However, coming off a 115-point season lines up Gaudreau for a massive pay raise. Currently making just $6.75 million per season, Gaudreau will likely become one of hockey's biggest earners in the offseason. Whether or not the Flames are willing to pay him as much remains to be seen, though early signs point to them being hellbent on keeping the 28-year-old in Calgary.

Still, things can go awry at any moment in contract negotiations, so it's still no guarantee that Gaudreau will be in a Flames uniform next year. If things go wrong and contract talks break down, these are the three best destinations for Johnny Gaudreau.

3 best destinations for Johnny Gaudreau if Flames contract talks fail

3. Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers may not be close to contending for a championship, but they could certainly be among the teams on Gaudreau's radar this offseason. He grew up near Philly, so playing close to home could prove very enticing for the 28-year-old. His Boston College roommate Kevin Hayes is also a key player for the Flyers, adding another close connection to the team for Gaudreau. Philadelphia doesn't have a ton of cap space to work with, but if it meant adding a player of Gaudreau's caliber, they'd certainly be willing to make some moves to facilitate his arrival. It may not be the most likely destination given the state of the team, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

2. New Jersey Devils

The Devils could look to bring Johnny Gaudreau home to New Jersey this offseason. This would be a major splash for the Devils and would indicate their intention to contend sooner than later. New Jersey has already declared its willingness to trade its first-round pick, so they could try to land another big-name player to help entice Gaudreau to join the team. A pairing of Gaudreau and Jack Hughes would be a lethal combination that could make the Devils real threats in the East as the team continues to come together. The Devils have the cap space to work out a deal for Gaudreau, but whether he's interested in joining a team that looks a little ways away from being true contenders remains to be seen. The Devils can vastly change their timeline to compete with some offseason trades, however, which could change how Gaudreau feels about returning home.

1. New York Islanders

The Islanders need a significant boost on offense this offseason, and Gaudreau may be the perfect target for them. The Islanders are in the middle of the pack when it comes to their salary cap, but offloading a few players could give them the spending power needed to bring in Gaudreau while also addressing other areas of need, and paying Noah Dobson. The Islanders were one of the least productive teams in the league offensively last year, so adding a player of Gaudreau's caliber would instantly provide a huge boost in the attacking third. While another 100+ point season in New York seems unlikely, Gaudreau could be the missing piece the Islanders need to reach the playoffs in 2022-23.
