Johnny Gaudreau's future in Calgary remains uncertain following the team's disappointing second-round playoff exit at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. The Battle of Alberta didn't play out in favor of the Flames, and now the team is at risk of losing its best player to free agency. Gaudreau is set to hit free agency this offseason, and the 29-year-old spoke on his future with the team and what he hopes plays out in the offseason, via Pat Steinberg.

Gaudreau spoke candidly with reporters on Saturday, stating adamantly that he'd like to remain in Calgary “if everything works out,” which is likely another way of saying so long as they don't lowball him on a contract offer.

“That would be pretty special, to win a Cup here,” said Gaudreau. “Calgary is a special place for me and I do really, really love it.”

Well, those are certainly encouraging comments for the ears of Flames fans, who will be eager to retain their superstar winger in the offseason. Allowing Gaudreau to hit free agency would be a crippling blow toward Calgary's chances at a Stanley Cup run next season.

The team was considered among the favorites to win it all this year, but the Oilers got it together at the right time to douse Calgary's flames and send them packing early.

Gaudreau has spent his entire nine-year career with the Flames, featuring in 602 games and registering 609 points. This past season, Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk joined Oilers' Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid as the only pair of teammates to record 100+ points. Gaudreau led the Flames with a career-high 115 points, including 40 goals and 75 assists.
