The Los Angeles Lakers had a very good night on Tuesday, as they surprisingly ended up with the fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft Lottery. L.A. was not projected to win a lottery pick, as most believed that they would end up with the No 11 or 12 pick. The Lakers leapfrogged a good number of teams to land the fourth pick which was definitely a pleasant surprise for them.

This was a lottery for the history books, and the Lakers — along with the New Orleans Pelicans and the Memphis Grizzlies who both unexpectedly won the first and second overall picks, respectively — were one of the major beneficiaries of a lottery that literally defied the odds.

What does this mean for the Lakers then? In an oversimplified scenario, moving up in the draft would translate to the team being able to sign a player that is much better than what they had originally expected or planned for. However, life in Hollywood is never simple, and this welcome development has presented several options for the Lakers that if pulled off properly, could definitely bring them a step closer towards their ultimate goal — another NBA title.

Draft Fourth

The simplest of the three scenarios we will present to you today would be for the Lakers to just go with it. That is, that they take the straightforward approach by picking fourth overall in the upcoming draft.

Odds are, Zion Williamson, Ja Morant, and R.J Barrett will be the top 3 picks in June, which leaves the Lakers with a number of intriguing prospects at the fourth spot. The name that pops out on the list would have to be Virginia's De'Andre Hunter because simply put, he is arguably the best available player for the Lakers outside the aforementioned top 3.

Hunter is a two-way wing with a respectable three-point shot, who could prove to be an important piece in L.A.'s young core. However, he does share the same position with Brandon Ingram, so this might just serve as a deterrent for the front office. Nevertheless, if the Lakers decide to pick fourth, then Hunter's upside should be more than enough to convince them to scoop up this promising youngster.

Trade Down

A second option for the Lakers would be to trade down a few spots in the draft. Surely, they would have already made plans for picking somewhere above the tenth spot, so doing so might not be such a bad idea for them at this point. The added benefit here is that by pursuing their original plan, they should be able to secure — at the very least — a future first-rounder from a team that might just be desperate enough to grab the fourth overall pick.

This move would be one that is geared towards securing the future for the Lakers, so essentially, this would somewhat sacrifice an immediate improvement for the squad in favor of a benefit that they would only be able to gain a few years down the road.

Include it in the Anthony Davis Package

We've saved the best for last. While the other two options definitely have their respective upsides, the most clear cut course of action for the Lakers has to be including the pick in the trade package for New Orleans Pelicans want-away superstar Anthony Davis.

Davis has already declared his unwavering desire to be traded despite the recent results of the lottery, and the Lakers still seem intent on going all in on him despite their recent front office overhaul.

L.A. were pretty much willing to throw everything they had — with the exception of LeBron James, of course — in the direction of New Orleans prior to the February trade deadline, so it would only be logical for them to be willing to part ways with this newly-acquired pick as well.

As for the Pelicans, this might just be too good to turn down, assuming that they also get a guy like Kyle Kuzma and/or Lonzo Ball in the deal. With the Zion Williamson acquisition pretty much a done deal, this should turn out to be a franchise-defining offseason for the Pelicans.

Fortune does favor the brave, and it seems that all of the gambles the Lakers took over the past year or so has been rewarded by a bit of good luck. Regardless of how this plays out, it is without question that L.A. now possess the pieces to make a huge splash not only this summer, but more importantly, in the season ahead as well.
