The San Antonio Spurs feature a quality young core led by rising stars Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl. This is a team that displayed contending ability last season. They could be in line to reach the next level with a great 2022 NBA Draft. However, part of drafting means passing on over-hyped players.

Today, we are taking a look at 3 players the Spurs need to avoid in the draft.

3 players Spurs must avoid in 2022 NBA Draft

Johnny Davis, Wisconsin

Johnny Davis was one of the most entertaining players to watch in college basketball during his time at Wisconsin. Many scouts believe he is destined to enjoy a strong NBA career. However, the Spurs need to pass on him in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Davis isn't necessarily elite in any one category. He's a solid athlete who features decent scoring and defensive ability. He offers a 6'5 wiry frame as well.

Although he projects to be a quality swingman in the league, it is difficult to imagine him blossoming into a true star in the NBA. Sure, it could happen. But he isn't going to score enough and isn't quite the playmaker to become “the guy” on a team.

His three-point numbers have regressed a bit even in college, and his solid defense may not transition well to the NBA.

Johnny Davis's best chance to emerge as a star would be if he was drafted to a poor team searching for a star. He shoots better off the dribble rather than spotting up so ball dominance could lead to strong performances. But the Spurs already have Dejounte Murray as their primary ball-handler, so Davis would be better suited for a different team.

Jeremy Sochan, Baylor

Jeremy Sochan is a bust candidate. At least, he's a bust candidate from an offensive standpoint.

Sochan is known for his defensive prowess. He stands 6'9 and features a 7-foot wingspan. Sochan could realistically develop into a Kawhi Leonard-esque defensive presence. In fact, some may already argue he could be an elite defender in his rookie season.

But the Spurs need offense on their team. They need to draft a player who can become a scoring option alongside Murray. And Sochan ins't that player. Could Sochan become a decent scorer down the road? Sure, but San Antonio would prefer to take a player with elite scoring potential with their first pick.

I believe Jeremy Sochan is a future DPOY. But San Antonio needs to let another team take a chance on the Baylor product.

TyTy Washington, Kentucky

Would the Spurs actually consider spending their 9th overall pick on a point guard when they already have Dejounte Murray?

Some teams place immense value on backup guards. A leader for the second unit can work wonders. However, the Spurs shouldn't draft Washington for a number of reasons other than the Murray aspect of the equation.

TyTy Washington is undersized. Yes, he's 6'4. But he's under 200 pounds and NBA guards will bully him. Sure, people might point to skinny guards such as Stephen Curry. But Curry also happens to be the greatest three-point shooter of all-time.

Washington is the owner of an impressive jumper. However, he hits most of his shots from inside the arc. His three-point shot is a work in progress.

Washington could upset the odds and become a star down the road. But the Spurs are on the verge of contending and simply don't need a guy like TyTy Washington on their roster at the moment.
