It seems like Liverpool will add one more young attacking threat in the form of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan just finished a great season, and it was accepted generally that he will not play for Benfica next season.

Liverpool, on the other hand, will likely lose Sadio Mane this summer, and finding a replacement is important for their continued success. Getting a 22-year-old with such a prolific season behind him might be the best possible move for Liverpool, especially considering their Champions League shortcomings.

So, here are three reasons why Darwin Nunez is the piece Liverpool needs for Champions League glory.

Why Darwin Nunez is final piece for Liverpool for UCL glory

3. The competition would be weaker

The fact is this: If Liverpool decide not to bring in Nunez, someone else will, and that would be devastating for the English side. There are clubs around the continent that would benefit from a player like Nunez.

For instance, if Real Madrid would bring in the Uruguayan striker, he would likely replace Karim Benzema and that would mean that they remain huge competitors for the title they won 14 times in their history. However, it is not only Real Madrid or some other club in Europe, it is also domestic.

Domestically, Liverpool's biggest competition would be Chelsea. Chelsea just got new owners and are ready to rebuild the team that won the 2021 Champions League. Due to the failures of Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku, they might look at strikers and figure out that the 22-year-old Nunez fits the bill perfectly.

Automatically, the young core of Chelsea becomes an immediate and future threat in the EPL and the Champions League. If Manchester United grab a hold of Nunez, they would also be huge competitors, maybe not this season but from the next season on.

Liverpool have many reasons to bring in Nunez for themselves, but also to weaken the competition around them, taking a huge talent away from the rest of the European elite.

2. He fits their future perfectly

What has somewhat gone under the radar is the job Liverpool have done to secure longevity on their roster. If the rumors about Nunez are true, he would be the second signing that looks to replace the famous trio of Mane-Salah-Roberto Firmino, after the 25-year-old Luis Diaz was brought in from Porto in January.

Nunez is even younger and would be that prolific part of the future Liverpool attack, a guy expected to score 30 or more goals in all competitions per season. Liverpool have seen what can happen when the future is not thought after, and examples of bad and never-ending rebuilds like Manchester United and Barcelona stand as ways not to go if you want your club to be successful.

With Nunez, if the transfer materializes, Liverpool would almost ensure consistency in success for the future, something they sorely lacked before. Consistency is key for the Champions League as well, which is the title that likely most hurt Liverpool fans this season.

If they manage to bring in Nunez, he would be that guy who can score in important games and be relied upon in the next 10 years. Thus, Liverpool should make a move for the Uruguayan striker if they want to remain a consistent threat in the Champions League, as Nunez will be one of the key reasons why they have a chance of winning it every year.

1. He is a proven number nine goalscorer

Now, this could be a controversial one, as Mohamed Salah is also a proven goalscorer. Salah has managed to score 156 goals in his Liverpool career, 34 of them coming in the Champions League.

However, Salah is a winger, which is an important distinction from a true number nine, a striker. That is not to say that Salah is not a great goalscorer, because he is, but there is definitely a difference. Nunez gets his goals from the middle and would be a great addition to a team that last had a reliable goalscorer in the middle with Luis Suarez back in 2014. With this signing, if it does go through, Liverpool would have another dimension in their offense that could make them unbeatable.

If we look at the Champions League final versus Real Madrid, Liverpool had tons of chances, but could not finish. Now, it is easy to be a general after the battle is over and say that Nunez would score a couple of those. In all honesty, we do not know.

However, we can assume that a guy who scored 26 goals in 28 games for Benfica in the Portuguese league knows his way around the goal. Goalscoring instinct is something that is intangible and cannot be learned, and Nunez clearly has it. Salah can score through his incredible skill and physical attributes, but Nunez has a nose for goal and would be another dimension for the already potent Liverpool attack.
