Trey Lance has received plenty of support from a multitude of former San Francisco 49ers players over the past year. Among them, Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young continues to be a vocal supporter of the 49ers' No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Young sees much promise in Lance’s potential with the 49ers. More so, he noted in February that he would like to see the team sign a veteran passer who could also serve as a teacher to the former North Dakota State standout.

During the annual Dwight Clark Legacy Series event this past week, Young once again offered his stamp of approval to Lance. This time around, Young noted that the versatile passer has been “progressing well.”

“So, Trey as a young player actually is processing as well as anybody,” Young said. “He can understand what's happening, and he can get to the opening. He can figure out who it is. And that's a real talent. It's not easy, and that's just not given — there's a real skill there. I have 100 percent confidence that Trey will figure out where to throw it. The challenge for Trey is once he knows, then how to deliver it, and that's another great talent that you have to have and develop.”

Lance logged a mere 71 pass attempts in his rookie campaign with the 49ers. He has so far been handed the keys to guide the first-team offense at the team's OTAs.

With more experience in anchoring the 49ers offense, Young believes that Lance will gain much-needed confidence in his own ability as a passer.

“More than anything, it's just him delivering the ball to that open guy over and over and over again and gaining that confidence because that's the spot he needs to work on,” Young said. “His is more of a throwing thing than a mind thing. Some guys have mind things; some guys have both. But Trey has a really sharp processing mind, and I think that's going to take him a long way.

“He's awesomely raw, and we're going to watch the development.”

The 49ers have yet to officially announce on just who will be the team's starting quarterback for the 2022 season. Still, all signs continue to point to Lance being the 49ers' signal-caller come Week 1.
