ā€œSan Francisco 49ersĀ running backĀ Elijah MitchellĀ is expected to play against the visitingĀ Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, less than two weeks after undergoing surgery for a fractured finger, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.ā€

The 49ers have currently listed the 23-year-old as questionable for their upcoming game. This status is due to Mitchell's finger injury and rib injury. He first suffered his rib injury against the Chicago Bears on October 31, but he continued to play. The running back only stopped playing after injuring his finger, which he then had surgery for on November 16.

Mitchell participated in limited practice this week prior to the 49ers Sunday matchup. However, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was optimistic on Mitchell's progress. On Friday, Shanahan said that the rookie was moving in the right direction in terms of his recovery.

Since being drafted as a sixth-round pick this year, Mitchell has firmly established himself as a key player for the San Francisco side. He is currently his team's top running back at this stage of the season. In the seven games he has played, the rookie leads his team in carries (116) and rushing yards (560). In terms of the NFL in general, Mitchell is 12th in the league for yards per carry (4.8).

With these stats, Elijah Mitchell's return to the 49ers' lineup will be crucial as they aim to make it 3 wins in 3 with a victory against the Vikings.
