Kyle Shanahan knows the Baltimore Ravens' release of safety Earl Thomas has made him a coveted player heading into the 2020 NFL season. However, it appears that is hardly the case for the San Francisco 49ers.

Despite his recent struggles, adding Earl Thomas would provide a major boost to any secondary given his Hall of Fame resume. However, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, head coach Kyle Shanahan is content with the talent at his disposal, safeties Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt:

Kyle Shanahan said 49ers don’t have interest in signing FS Earl Thomas. He’s very happy with Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt: “We have our team.”

Despite the praise for Ward and Tartt, there is no question that Earl Thomas would still provide an immediate upgrade over the top. Meanwhile, his relationship with cornerback Richard Sherman would also make for an intriguing reunion for the “Legion of Boom” that was started with the Seattle Seahawks.

However, there is no telling what kind of effect the five-time Pro Bowler's price tag and recent baggage would have on the team. Shanahan pointing to the veteran tandem of Ward and Tartt as the reasoning behind San Francisco's lack of interest in Earl Thomas is indicative of the 49ers' confidence in their current personnel.

The 49ers certainly have good reason to be optimistic given how dominant this defense was during their Super Bowl run last season. They will be relying on their continuity to finish the job this time around… without Earl Thomas.
