While many expected Stephen Gostkowski to return to the New England Patriots, he still remains a free agent, and another team may be ready to try and make a move on the kicker.

According to a report from NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco via 247 Sports, the San Francisco 49ers have apparently begun to show interest in Gostkowski.

Despite the team having placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Robbie Gould, he has yet to sign the franchise tender, apparently unhappy with the fact that he was not allowed to test the free agency market.

“The 49ers and Gould appear to be at odds over the team’s decision to lock him up for this season on the franchise tag,” Maiocco said. “Gould has made it clear he wanted to be able to explore his options as a free agent, especially the possibility of a return to Chicago, where he played his first 11 NFL seasons.”

Gostkowski, on the other hand, has been allowed to test the market, but hasn’t worked anything out just yet.

While the Patriots are interested in re-signing their 13-year veteran, there hasn’t been much in the way of an actual contract just yet, with differences over the financials of the deal apparently being the main culprit.

While Gostkowski has been missed some big kicks throughout his career, his 87.4% accuracy on field goal attempts is one of the best in NFL history, and his 98.9% extra point attempts also show that he rarely misses.

Since signing his $17.2 million deal with the Patriots in 2015, Gostkowski has continued to help the team win multiple Super Bowls.
