The Detroit Tigers take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Our MLB odds series has our Tigers Diamondbacks prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Tigers Diamondbacks.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in real trouble. They got crushed by the Detroit Tigers on Friday in the first game of this series. On Saturday, staff ace Zac Gallen dominated through the first six innings but then ran into trouble in the seventh. He left with the score tied 2-2. After the Arizona bullpen came in, the Tigers scored four more runs for a 6-2 lead. Detroit went on to win 8-3. The Diamondbacks are mad enough about the simple reality of losing, but they have to be especially annoyed by the fact that Detroit got shut out in consecutive home games by the Miami Marlins before flying to Phoenix for the weekend. Detroit's going-nowhere offense has come alive against the D-Backs' pitching staff. It's a sign that Arizona simply isn't getting the production it needs from any part of its roster. The pitching has dropped the ball this weekend, but for much of the season, the hitting hasn't been up to par. With starting pitcher Merrill Kelly injured, the margins are even smaller for the Diamondbacks, who are 21-25 through 46 games and therefore will probably be under .500 by Memorial Day. Any team under .500 on Memorial Day knows it needs a very strong and productive month of June to elevate itself into meaningful playoff contention before the All-Star break.

Arizona needs an 8-2 stretch of 10 games to get its season back on track. The more the D-Backs trip over themselves and lose to mediocre opponents such as the weak-hitting Tigers, the more they will reduce their margin for error heading into the summer. This is a very important game for the D-Backs as they try to get their season pointed in the right direction.

Why The Tigers Could Cover The Spread

The Tigers, who couldn't score a single run against the Miami Marlins in back-to-back home games this past week (one of those games being a 10-inning 1-0 loss), have rediscovered how to hit in Phoenix. With 13 runs on Friday and eight runs on Saturday, the Tigers' bats have awakened. This needed to happen, and it has. With the Tigers getting consistently strong pitching, Detroit just needs five runs per game to be very successful. Getting eight or more runs in each of the first two games of this series in Phoenix has been fantastic, but the encouraging thing about the Tigers is that they don't need that many runs to win. They just need to avoid getting smothered and held to two or fewer runs. Frustratingly, that has happened a lot through a month and a half of baseball, but if this team can just score five in this game, it should cover.

Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover The Spread

The Diamondbacks have Jordan Montgomery on the mound. Monty is a proven workhorse. He's a guy the D-Backs should want to have the ball in a game of such urgent importance. Expect Montgomery to shut down a vulnerable Detroit batting order which has a lot of holes and dead weight. This is a good matchup for Arizona.

Final Tigers-Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick

The Diamondbacks are in a near-must-win situation, and Jordan Montgomery is going to be up to the task. Take Arizona.
