The San Francisco 49ers have signed former New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, adding yet another stop to the well-traveled receiver's career.

Sanu, who also played with the Cincinnati Bengals, will pack his bags for the NFC West. His agent confirmed the story, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter:

This acquisition of Mohamed Sanu boils down to two points: The 49ers are hurting at the wide receiver position and they are bringing in a familiar face for Kyle Shanahan.

Deebo Samuel was recently placed on injured reserve after suffering a setback in his recovery from foot surgery.

Besides Samuel, rookie Brandon Aiyuk is dealing with a hamstring injury he sustained earlier in training camp. Even though Aiyuk is expected to return as soon as Week 2, San Francisco doesn't appear to be confident in its current receiving corps.

During Sunday's game versus the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers deployed a receiving corps that featured Trent Taylor, Kendrick Bourne, and Dante Pettis. Nevertheless, San Francisco will now have Sanu in the wide receiver room.

A season ago, Sanu was traded to the New England Patriots after a stint with the Atlanta Falcons. Sanu spent three and a half seasons with the Falcons before landing with the Patriots.

In his lone season with the Patriots, Sanu struggled, catching just 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown in eight games. he would be released by New England in training camp as part of the team's roster cuts.

With Atlanta, Sanu spent one year with Shanahan as his offensive coordinator in 2016. That season, Sanu produced 59 receptions for 653 yards and four touchdowns. Even though Sanu sputtered in 2019, the 49ers are hoping Sanu can give them a boost at wide receiver while they deal with injuries.
