Steve Young is confident about Trey Lance's abilities as a quarterback, but despite his talents, the San Francisco 49ers legend warns the young QB of the pitfalls he might end up in if he doesn't proceed with caution.

In his appearance on 49ers Talk, Young shared how Lance should expect adversities to hit him. It will come one way or another, and what will determine whether or not Lance will become a great quarterback is how he responds to those challenges.

“It’s going to be so iterative over time. He’s going to face how many filters and hurdles, the challenges. He’s going to be the old Mike Tyson [saying], ‘Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.’ He hasn’t been punched in the face. And I mean this in a metaphorical [way],” Young explained, per NBC Sports.

“You’re going to get punched in the face 50 times. Different reasons, different times, different things that happen and you have to right yourself, figure out what to do through it and we have to watch you do it.”

As for 49ers fans expecting Trey Lance to make a miracle and immediately lead the team to the Super Bowl à la Patrick Mahomes, Steve Young wants them to temper their expectations. As he reiterated, Lance must first come through all the filters to become a more complete QB ready to handle the pressure of Super Bowl contention.

“You’re going to watch Trey Lance for a couple games go, ‘I got this.' Trey doesn’t have it, you don’t have it. There are big are filters, There’s ‘I had a terrible game and people booed me at home' filter. There’s a thousand things that have to happen that he’s got to live through and then we’ve got to watch how he responds,” Young added.

While it might be a bit harsh, that is the reality Lance is facing. It's also coming from an NFL legend who knows what it takes to be a winning QB in the league, so he couldn't ask for a better source than Young.

Hopefully, though, Lance survives those “filters” and transform into a QB that will catapult the 49ers to the promised land.
