Currently holding a 2-4 record, it's looking like the San Francisco 49ers season is slipping away from them. The news continues to get worse though, as Kyle Shanahan fears the team will be losing a top defensive prospect. Apparently, Javon Kinlaw might be out for the remainder of the year.

According to Tracy Sandler, Kinlaw may have to receive season-ending knee surgery. If that's the case, the 49ers lose a centerpiece to their defensive line. He's missed two games already as the coaching staff was hopeful the injury would heal. Instead, it's taken a turn for the worse.

Since losing the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco hasn't quite been the same. The 49ers struggled last year due to the insane amount of injuries suffered on the roster. The franchise was hopeful for a bounce-back season. Instead, the 49ers have continued struggling and seem to have been bitten by the injury bug yet again.

In the three games Javon Kinlaw has played, he's only recorded a measly six total tackles. The front office traded DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts and selected Kinlaw as his replacement in the 2020 NFL Draft. So far, the move hasn't panned out as Kinlaw has had a hard time adjusting to the professional level.

Even so, Kyle Shanahan is hopeful Kinlaw will figure things out. This injury is a major setback though and creates issues for the 49ers' defensive front. Considering how great the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams have been playing, this could be an early sign of the 49ers' 2021 season coming to a short end.

The news isn't official as of yet, but typically when a head coach feels his player will need season-ending surgery, it's never good news. Keep a close eye on Javon Kinlaw's status for now. In the meantime, Kyle Shanahan must focus the 49ers' attention on the Chicago Bears in their Week 8 matchup.
