With the 2020 NFL Draft this week, the San Francisco 49ers could be seeking to add depth at the tight end spot. However, it appears the defending NFC champion may have already attempted to upgrade at tight end this past season via trade, with New York Giants' Evan Engram as a target.

According to Forbes' Vincent Frank on Twitter, the 49ers showed interest in trying to acquire the Giants tight end.

San Francisco, of course, has a lethal option in star tight end George Kittle, the two-time Pro-Bowler who caught for over one thousand receiving yards in the past two seasons with the Niners. Perhaps the first-time All-Pro First Team selection this past season could get some help between blocking pass rushers and catching tosses, though.

Engram, at 25 years old, is a third-year veteran tight end for the Giants, who amassed more than 700 receiving yards in his rookie year with Big Blue but has since seen performance dip, with an MCL injury and foot injury forcing the Ole Miss product to miss a combined 13 games over the past two years.

Besides Kittle, who led the 49ers in receiving yards in 2019, San Francisco's wide receivers corps includes rising sophomore wideout Deebo Samuel and undrafted wideout Kendrick Bourne. Veteran receiver Emmanuel Sanders acquired mid-season in 2019 from the Denver Broncos, became a free agent in 2020, and signed with the New Orleans Saints. So, should the 49ers target Engram in a trade this spring, it could be an effort to bolster quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's passing target options, regardless of the tight end position.
